Most of the asteroids revolve between Mars and Jupiter

Most asteroids are found in the main asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter. Their size can range from 10 meters to 530 kilometers. The total mass of all the asteroids discovered so far is less than that of Earth’s moon.

Most asteroids are irregular in shape. Some are almost circular, while many appear oval. There are some asteroids that have their own moon. Many also have two moons. Scientists have also discovered double and triple asteroid systems, in which these rocks keep moving around each other.

Asteroids are divided into three types – C, S and M types. C-type (chondrite) asteroids are the most common. They are probably composed of clay and silicate rocks and are dark in appearance. It is one of the oldest things in the solar system. S-type asteroids are composed of silicate materials and nickel-iron. Whereas M type asteroids are metallic (nickel-iron). Their composition depends on the distance from the Sun.

Most asteroids orbit in the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter, but many asteroids have orbits that pass near Earth. Asteroids crossing the Earth’s orbital path are known as Earth-crossers.

When an asteroid is discovered, it is named by the International Astronomical Union Committee. The name can be anything, but a number is also added to it like – (99942) Apophis. Asteroids are also named after artists, scientists, historical characters.
